Best Fertilizer for Cauliflower: Verified NPK Doses, Boron and the Curd-Stage Split

Cauliflower programmes put phosphorus, potash and boron in the basal and split nitrogen three ways, with the last split at curd initiation: 125–150 kg N, 75–85 kg P₂O₅ and 75–85 kg K₂O per hectare in northern India. Verified doses for six regions inside.

Best Fertilizer for Cauliflower: Verified NPK Doses, Boron and the Curd-Stage Split

Cauliflower is the most timing-sensitive of the cole crops: the last nitrogen split is deliberately placed at curd initiation, and boron sits in the basal dose in the Indian and Pakistani programmes. The best fertilizer for cauliflower is your region's verified dose applied on that schedule — not a generic vegetable blend.

The verified doses (kg N–P₂O₅–K₂O per hectare)

India (ICAR-IIVR Varanasi / CCS HAU Hisar): 125–150 kg N, 75–85 kg P₂O₅ and 75–85 kg K₂O per hectare. PAU's vegetable package point dose: 123.6-61.8-61.8. Pakistan (Vegetable Research Institute, AARI Faisalabad, for Punjab): 120–150 kg N, 75–90 kg P₂O₅ and 75–90 kg K₂O. Bangladesh (BARI / BARC FRG): 120–140 kg N, 65–80 kg P₂O₅ and 70–85 kg K₂O.

United States (Midwest Vegetable Production Guide): 160–210 kg N, 90–135 kg P₂O₅ and 130–190 kg K₂O per hectare; the Southeast (UF/IFAS) runs 170–225 / 90–135 / 135–190 with weekly fertigation after a basal. Tamil Nadu (TNAU) fertigates 135-135-135 through drip. As with cabbage, the regional spread is wide — Japanese and American programmes run far heavier than South Asian ones — so always work from your own region's recommendation.

The schedule: basal with boron, last split at curd initiation

The Indian programme applies all the phosphorus, potash, borax and one third of the nitrogen at transplanting, during ridge formation. The remaining nitrogen follows in two side-dress splits: at 30 days after transplanting (active vegetative phase) and at 50 days (curd initiation). Pakistan's programme is the same shape — phosphorus, potash, boron and one third of the nitrogen incorporated at ridging, the rest in two equal side-dressings, the last at curd initiation (50–60 days). Bangladesh rings the side-dress around the plants. The US Midwest programme splits nitrogen three ways by weight: 50 kg/ha pre-plant, 60 kg/ha three weeks after transplanting, and the remainder just before curd initiation.

Boron deserves its own sentence: it appears in the basal of the Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi programmes (as borax) because cauliflower is boron-sensitive — hollow stem and browning are the classic deficiency picture the guides are written to prevent. The Schedule Builder at /fertilizer-schedule shows the dated split plan for your country.

Products and conversion

Basal phosphorus as DAP or SSP, potash as MOP, borax for the boron share, and urea for the nitrogen splits — that is the product skeleton behind every programme above. The recommendations are written in nutrients per hectare; the fertilizer calculator at /calculator converts them into product quantities for your exact area with the math shown. Garden-scale growers should use the cauliflower page under /vegetables for per-plant guidance.

Bottom line: the best fertilizer for cauliflower is the verified regional dose — 125–150 / 75–85 / 75–85 kg per hectare in northern India — with phosphorus, potash and boron basal at transplanting and nitrogen split so the last share lands at curd initiation.

Frequently asked questions

A verified regional dose with boron in the basal and the last nitrogen split at curd initiation: 125–150 kg N, 75–85 kg P₂O₅ and 75–85 kg K₂O per hectare in northern India (ICAR-IIVR/CCS HAU), or 120–150 / 75–90 / 75–90 in Punjab, Pakistan (AARI).
At curd initiation — about 50 days after transplanting in the Indian programme and 50–60 days in the Pakistani one. The earlier split lands at 30 days, in the active vegetative phase.
The Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi programmes all place borax (boron) in the basal dose at transplanting because cauliflower is boron-sensitive; the guides are written to prevent deficiency problems such as hollow stem and browning.
Northern India: 125–150 kg N, 75–85 kg P₂O₅, 75–85 kg K₂O. The US Midwest guide runs heavier at 160–210 kg N, 90–135 kg P₂O₅ and 130–190 kg K₂O. Use your own region's figure.
Use the FertDose fertilizer calculator: it turns the nutrient dose into urea, DAP and MOP quantities and 50 kg bags for your field size, with the math shown.
