Best Fertilizer for Potatoes: Verified NPK Doses and the Two-Split Schedule

The best fertilizer for potatoes is a verified regional dose applied in two splits — half the nitrogen at planting, half at earthing-up. Punjab (Pakistan): 150–180 kg N, 100–125 kg P₂O₅ and 125–150 kg K₂O per hectare. Sourced doses for six more regions inside.

Best Fertilizer for Potatoes: Verified NPK Doses and the Two-Split Schedule

Ask ten potato growers for the best fertilizer and you will hear ten brand names. Ask the research institutes and you get something more useful: a verified NPK dose for your region and a two-split schedule — half the nitrogen in the furrow at planting, the other half side-dressed at earthing-up, just before tuber initiation. Potato is a heavy potash feeder, and every official dose below reflects that.

The verified doses (kg N–P₂O₅–K₂O per hectare)

Pakistan (Punjab potato belt, Potato Research Institute Sahiwal / AARI Faisalabad): 150–180 kg N, 100–125 kg P₂O₅ and 125–150 kg K₂O per hectare; the point recommendation is 165-112-137. India (ICAR Central Potato Research Institute): 150–180 kg N, 80–100 kg P₂O₅ and 120–150 kg K₂O per hectare for the UP/Punjab/Haryana plains. PAU's vegetable package states products directly per acre: 165 kg urea + 155 kg SSP + 40 kg MOP per acre, plus 20 tonnes of farmyard manure per acre (a nutrient dose of 185-62-62 kg/ha).

Bangladesh (BARI Tuber Crops Research Centre): 135–165 kg N, 65–85 kg P₂O₅ and 135–165 kg K₂O per hectare; the FRG-based recommendations include 90-20-90 (with half the nitrogen basal and the rest at 35 days after planting) and 161-32-150, plus sulphur, zinc and boron where the guide prescribes them. United States Pacific Northwest (University of Idaho / WSU / UW-Madison extension): the heaviest programme we hold — 200–270 kg N, 135–200 kg P₂O₅ and 200–290 kg K₂O per hectare for high-yield irrigated production. Germany (Lower Saxony): 180-85-260. Poland (IUNG-PIB): 125-80-210 for one production class and 70-60-150 for another — a reminder that target yield and use (table vs processing) move the dose.

The schedule: planting, then earthing-up

Across Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Germany, France and Poland the verified pattern is consistent: all the phosphorus, all or half the potash, and half the nitrogen go into the furrow or ridge at planting; the remaining nitrogen (and potash, where it was split) is side-dressed at earthing-up, roughly 25–35 days after planting, before tuber initiation. The US Pacific Northwest programme splits three ways instead — 30% at planting, 40% at tuber initiation, 30% at bulking — and stops two to three weeks before vine killing.

One product note appears in the Indian guidance: SOP (sulphate of potash) is preferred over MOP for processing tubers, where dry matter and fry quality matter. Build the dated version of your country's schedule in the Schedule Builder at /fertilizer-schedule.

Converting the dose into bags

Recommendations are published as nutrients per hectare, not as bags. PAU's per-acre product line above (165 kg urea + 155 kg SSP + 40 kg MOP per acre) is the exception that proves the rule — most sources leave the conversion to you. The fertilizer calculator at /calculator converts any of these doses into urea, DAP and MOP quantities for your exact area, per acre or per hectare, and shows the math. Potato is a field crop in the calculator, so it is pre-filled there.

Bottom line: the best fertilizer for potatoes is your region's verified dose — 150–180 / 100–125 / 125–150 kg per hectare in Punjab (Pakistan) — with everything except half the nitrogen placed at planting and the rest at earthing-up. Check your region's dose on the potato country pages, then run your area through /calculator for exact product quantities.

Frequently asked questions

A verified regional NPK dose applied in two splits. In Punjab (Pakistan) the Potato Research Institute / AARI recommendation is 150–180 kg N, 100–125 kg P₂O₅ and 125–150 kg K₂O per hectare; in India, ICAR-CPRI recommends 150–180 / 80–100 / 120–150 kg per hectare.
PAU's vegetable package states products per acre directly: 165 kg urea + 155 kg SSP + 40 kg MOP per acre, plus 20 tonnes of farmyard manure per acre. Per-hectare doses convert to per acre by dividing by 2.471.
At earthing-up, roughly 25–35 days after planting and before tuber initiation. Half the nitrogen goes in the furrow at planting; the remaining half is side-dressed at earthing-up in the Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, German, French and Polish recommendations.
The Indian (ICAR-CPRI) guidance prefers SOP — sulphate of potash — for processing tubers, where dry matter and fry quality matter. MOP is the standard potash source in the other recommendations we hold.
It depends on the products chosen. Enter the dose and your area in the FertDose calculator and it returns exact urea, DAP and MOP quantities and 50 kg bag counts.
